Cross Country Information
The Tri-City Relays Youth Cross Country Team took first place team awards in the Bantam (9 – 10 yr. old) Girls and Boys
divisions this past Saturday, November 18 at Hagan-Stone Park in Pleasant Garden, NC. Teams from Maryland, D.C., Virginia,
North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia competed for the chance to earn a trip to Spokane, Washington for the national
competition that will take place on December 9, 2006. The competition was very tough as many of the kids we competed
against are national caliber runners. Region 3 has historically been one of the toughest regions in USATF. The scoring
in cross country is different than many of the other sports. The lower the score of your top 5 runners, the better your
team’s performance. You want as many of your five runners to be in the top places as possible. You add their places up to
get your score. A perfect score would be “15” because you take places 1,2,3,4, and 5 with your five runners.
The significance comes from the fact that Tri-City won both the boys and girls divisions. Our program has emerged to be
one of the top programs in the southeast region. Our coaches, Perry Cabean, Jeff Sides, Abdou Lachgar, and John Marshall
bring extensive domestic and international experience to the process. The kids began training in early September with many
of them splitting duties in other sports such as football, soccer, and swimming. As those seasons ended, the kids began
to concentrate and focus on their running.
In the girls bantam competition, Tri-City Relays defeated runner-up Mt. Pleasant Track Club of South Carolina with a score
of 31 – 40. The Peachtree City Flash of Georgia finished third with 70 points. Tri-City was led by Jackeitha Baker who
finished 2nd overall and first place in the team competition by covering the 3000m course in 12:12. Finishing second for
Tri-City was Elisabeth Marshall as she finished third overall and 2nd in the team competition with a time of 12:23.
Tri-City’s third runner was Ciani Byrom as she took 15th place overall and 5th in the team competition in 13:33. Holding
down the 4th and 5th positions for Tri-City was Erin Morrison and Celine Skrivanek as they finished 29th and 30th overall
and 11th and 12th respectively in the team competition with times of 14:49 and 15:02.
In the boys competition, Tri-City Relays defeated Mt. Pleasant Track Club of South Carolina with a score of 54 – 69. The
McLean track club of Virginia and the CC Pacers of North Carolina finished in a tie for third with 77 points apiece. Absent
from the competition for Tri-City was their number 1 runner, William Dunn, who was playing in a Pop Warner football playoff
game. The team had to rely on its depth and experience as each runner had to move up one place and cover for the person
who normally finishes ahead of them. They did this well. Leading the charge was Miles Cabean who finished as Tri-City’s
first runner. Miles finished 7th overall and 2nd in the team competition as he covered the 3,000 meter course in 11:51.
Joseph Wilson was Tri-City’s second runner at 12:25. Joseph finished 16th overall and 7th in the team competition. Running
3rd for Tri-City was Sami Lachgar who finished 22nd overall and 10th in the team competition with a time of 12:40. The
fourth position was held by Jay Spieler. Jay finished 24th overall and 11th in team competition. Tri-City’s 5th runner
was Connor Shoaf who ran 13:50. Connor finished 42nd overall and took 22nd in team competition. Finishing sixth for
Tri-City was Adam Chase. Despite not feeling well, Adam put out a valiant effort and finished 50th overall and 27th in the
team competition with a time of 14:20.
Tri-City had other notable individual performances as well. Divonnie Powell qualified for her second national USATF
championship race by finishing 12th in the Midget (11 – 12 yrs. old) Girls division with a time of 12:25. In the Midget
Boys division, Perry Cabean continued a great season as he finished 3rd in his race in a time of 11:23 despite having an
accident during the race. The accident occurred while he was leading the race. Last but not least, Kelli Marshall won
a medal in the 2000 meter Sub-Bantam (8 & under) Girls race as she covered the course in 10:59. This group however does
not have a race at the national event.
This is only the second time in its 26 year history that Tri-City has competed in the USATF regional cross country meet.
A smaller group of runners will compete in the Footlocker South Cross Country Championships to be held at McAlpine Creek
Park, this Saturday, November 25, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The season concludes as the entire team travels to Orlando
Florida on December 2, 2006. We will compete in the AAU National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships.
