AAU State Cross Country Championships

The Tri-City Relays Cross Country team continued its successful season while competing at the AAU State Cross Country Championships.  Several Tri-City Athletes won first place gold medal awards at the event held on Saturday, November 14th at Frank Liske Park in Concord, NC.  This meet served as a qualifier for the national AAU Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships to be held in Orlando, FL on December 5.  In the first race, Dania Hatch won the intermediate girls (15 - 16 yr. old) 5,000m run in 28:08.  Carl Walton, Jr. and Perry Cabean finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the intermediate boys 5,000m run.  Carl covered the course in 17:37 and Perry finished in 18:18. Both Carl and Perry will compete with the Nubian Project at the national championship in Orlando.  In the next race, Sylvester Reed III won the primary (8 and under) 2,000m run in 8:51.  Sylvester had to come from behind to win his race and claim his first state championship.  Caleb Pledger, competing in his first season of cross country, won the sub-bantam (9 yr. old) 3,000m run with a time of 15:16.  Elisabeth Marshall claimed another first place medal by winning the midget (12 yr. old) girls 3,000m run in a time of 12:08.  Elisabeth, who has been an All-American in cross country, will compete with the University City Niners' midget girls team at the national championship race in Orlando.  Miles Cabean captured his 4th 3,000m title with a first place finish in the midget boys division.  Miles is undefeated in AAU state cross country championships since 2005.  Gracie Nicklas-Morris won the girls youth (14 yr. old) 4,000m race with a time of 18:27.  This was Gracie's first AAU state championship event.  Spence Kirk, another first time competitor, won the boys sub-youth (13 yr. old) 4,000m run by covering the course in 17:46.  Several other Tri-City athletes had great performances too. Mia Marshall finished fourth in the primary girls 2,000m race.  She covered the distance in 13:05.  Kelli Marshall finished 5th in the bantam (10 yr. old) girls 3,000m run with a time of 17:42. The cross country team compete in this weekend's USATF Region 3 cross country championships to be held in Spartanburg, South Carolina on Saturday, November 21.
